Uses of plants Plant families

Vegetable groups

Vegetables can be put into  groups depending on the part of the plant that is eaten. Examples of these  groups include:

  • root  vegetables: carrots, beetroot, radish
  • leafy  vegetables: silverbeet, lettuce, spinach, cabbage
  • immature  seeds: peas, beans
  • stem  tubers: potatoes, yams, kūmara
  • immature  flowers: cauliflower, globe artichoke
  • fruit  eaten as vegetables: pumpkins, tomatoes, cucumber.
