HT1031 Soils 1

Introduction

HT1031 Soils 1 covers part of achievement standard 90919, AHS1.3: Demonstrate knowledge of soil management practices.

What you will do

This work will take about 10 hours.

Use the HT1031 study plan as a guide to work your way through the sessions.

You will:

  • draw a soil profile
  • determine the texture of the soil in your garden.
 

Assessment

Your teacher will look at how well you:

  • draw and label a soil profile
  • determine the texture of your garden soil.
 

What you will need

  • a spade
  • glass jar with a lid, such as a jam or coffee jar (about 200 ml)
  • plastic bag or an old shopping bag
  • piece of wood or something heavy
  • enough topsoil from your garden to fill one third of your glass jar
  • ruler/tape measure
  • newspaper
  • ‘Texture by feel chart’ insert, HT1031A
  • workbook for HT1031.
